  1. Hey joy, I know Exposure is very important. Here is my stuation, now I am doing an internship in a small company, the people around me is German. Although I can speak a little German, they can speak a little English, but it always difficult to talk deeply. Eventually, just hello and goodbye everyday. I really want to change this disadvantageous condition.

    • Pellen, that does sound challenging. Don’t know if you want to remain in Germany long-term, but if yes, you’d probably be best off trying to learn the language and culture deeply. Either way, you’re fortunate that your English is excellent, and you can find and interact with a broader online professional community in English and Chinese, as I note in this blog post. Best wishes. Joy

  2. Hey Joy, this is a great article! Every time I read your article I get some new ideas, maybe this indicate that I have a lot of room waiting for improvements.

After reading this article, I reviewed the “Hard Work Alone Will Get You Nowhere” as well. I like it! Hard Work is the foundation that we get catch others’ eyes, but more should be done to improve personal brand. I attend a workshop called “How to build your personal brand” this November, some ideas are striking to me. Probably this concept is relatively new to me, but I think it is time to build our own brands.

I know an online clothing store called Conversation Pieces (http://shopconversationpieces.com/). One reason it is quite different from other sites is that every product it sells has a warm & sunny name/title, and also it uses different background for different products. This is a great way to market, I think this could bring us some thoughts:)

You’re right that we can gain personal lessons from the best consumer brands out there. Thanks for pointing out the Conversation Pieces store. Indeed, this is a great example of terrific brand-building which makes me want to buy! Happy holidays to you as well! Joy

  7. Hey Joy,

This is a great post and thanks a lot for this helpful article. If I understand it correctly, there are two main points in it. First of all, know what is going on in one industry. I know this is important because sometime people make choices without deep understanding of the industry. This is a waste of time, both to the interviewers and the interviewees. After that, show one’s own idea to the potential bosses by posting comments, to let those seniors know me and my idea even before the interview.

I actually have a question about this. How can I find the right place? I’m not sure if you know a website called mitbbs.com. This is a very popular forum among oversea Chinese and I used to go there frequently, until I realized that this is a place where my potential bosses won’t visit, simply because it is in Chinese language. So here comes my question, could you please give us some specific examples? For example, if I’m interested in, say management consulting, or patent law, or I want to a job in Apple, where should I start first? I know this is my own homework and I should do the research by myself, but your advice will be appreciated!

Again thank you very much for your blog!

    • Hi Haodong: When I started out in my career, we had to go to the library and look up books (imagine that!), but now, the Internet is an amazing research for exploring industries which may interest you. Study the blogs and Twitter feeds of thought leaders in the industries you’re exploring, check out the comments, review their biographies, and when you feel comfortable, jump in the conversation! Good luck.

  9. I am in USA now. I konw your method is suitable for people in USA. These methods are not suitable for people in Chinese absolutely. Though sometimes the appearance is the same, the approach is different.
